Debt counselling and debt review FAQ

Does asking for an assessment place me under debt review?

No. An enquiry or initial information request does not automatically place you under debt review. A formal assessment and applicable process are required.

What does over-indebted mean?

It generally refers to being unable to meet credit obligations on time after reasonable household living expenses are considered.

Can I use credit while under debt review?

Consumers under debt review should not take further credit. Existing facilities are generally not available for continued spending.

What happens to my car or home loan?

They remain secured obligations. Sustainable payments, insurance and communication remain important.

How long does debt review take?

There is no single duration. It depends on balances, interest, the sustainable payment and whether circumstances change.

Can debt review be removed instantly?

No universal instant process exists. The lawful route depends on your case status, findings and procedural history.

When is a clearance certificate issued?

Only after the applicable account and legal requirements have been met and verified.

What documents help an assessment?

Recent proof of income, bank statements, identity and address documents, plus current creditor statements, usually provide a reliable starting point.
