What debt counselling is

Debt counselling is a regulated process for consumers who may be over-indebted. A registered debt counsellor assesses income, essential living costs and credit commitments before recommending an appropriate course.

What it is not

An enquiry does not automatically place you under debt review, erase debt or guarantee lower instalments. A proper affordability assessment and formal process are required.

A sensible first step

Gather recent income evidence, bank statements and creditor information. Accurate figures help the counsellor understand whether your household budget can support a sustainable proposal.

What to do next

If debt repayments no longer fit after reasonable household expenses, gather accurate statements and request a confidential assessment. Asking for information does not automatically place you under debt review.
